Matthew put on a troubled expression. "It's not that I don't want to help you, man. But you didn't give me a heads-up. If I slip up and you two end up divorced, wouldn't that make me the bad guy?"
He panicked and started waving his hands as if he just realized what he had implied.
"It's not what you think. I really didn't know," he stammered.
Watching him put on such a show, I sighed.
After knowing him for over twenty years, I wanted to see how much of our friendship was real and how much was fake.
Now, it was clear. I had been fooling myself. I didn't see through him in time, which is why I ended up where I did in my past life.
"Is that so? Don't worry. You'll remember soon enough," I said, turning to my boss with an apologetic look.
"I'm sorry for what happened today. But there's something I need to ask to clear my name.
"Do you remember the time in those photos? We had a difficult client that day. We went out to dinner with them and closed the deal. Matthew and Isabella were there too," I said.
Hearing this, Matthew's face suddenly grew tense.
My boss squinted. He recalled the details and slowly nodded.
In the crowd, Isabella also stepped forward to support my story.
