Love's Lost Ember, Fading in the Cold1

When I collapsed on the film set and was taken to the hospital, Wilson Burch was attending an awards ceremony with his beloved.

The doctor came over with the examination report and said, "You need to be hospitalized for chemotherapy. You'd better notify your family now."

I took the report from the doctor, unwilling to believe it. How could a mere fainting spell lead to a terminal illness?

Suppressing my panic, I dialed the familiar number. As expected, no one answered...

I rarely called him, but this time I persisted, perhaps because he was one of the few important people in my life.

After I called him for the tenth time, it finally went through.

But it wasn't Wilson who answered. It was his mistress. "Cierra, Mr. Burch is busy right now. Maybe you could call back later."

"Give the phone to Wilson," I said coldly, suppressing my bitterness.

Compared to me, she seemed more like his wife.

But no matter how neglected I was, I was still Wilson's wife. Celeste had no choice but to hand the phone back to Wilson. Moments later, his familiar voice came through.

"What is it?"

I tried to calm down. "I'm sick."
