Elena was playing a much bigger game.
The courtroom was silent on the day of the final hearing.
Daniel sat confidently beside his lawyer Mark Benson, looking completely relaxed.
He believed he had already won.
Mark began listing the settlement terms.
“Mr. Carter will receive the marital home, both vehicles, investment accounts, and shared savings.”
“And Ms. Carter will retain custody of their daughter.”
The judge turned to Elena.
“Do you agree to these terms?”
Elena nodded.
“I do.”
A ripple of whispers spread across the courtroom.
Daniel smiled.
Exactly what he wanted.
Then Elena added one sentence.
“There’s just one clarification I’d like to make.”
The judge looked up.
“My grandmother’s lakeside property,” Elena said. “It was inherited before my marriage. I want it clearly recorded as separate property.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“That worthless land? Keep it.”
But his lawyer suddenly stopped smiling.
Because Elena’s lawyer was already handing the judge a thick binder.
“Your Honor,” Rachel said calmly, “these documents show that Mr. Carter used multiple marital assets as collateral for undisclosed business loans.”
The judge frowned and began reading.
Emails.
Loan agreements.
Financial statements.
