Daniel swallowed the lump in his throat.
Then he looked at Rachel.
“If I agree,” he said slowly, “I’ll need to know everything. Medical records, legal paperwork… everything.”
Rachel’s face filled with hope.
“You mean—?”
“I’ll do it,” Daniel said quietly.
Rachel broke down in tears of relief.
Grace smiled and climbed onto Daniel’s lap, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Over the next six months, Daniel’s life changed completely.
He arranged the legal adoption process and moved Rachel and Grace into his apartment so Rachel could receive better medical care. He learned how to care for a child—bedtime routines, favorite foods, even how to braid hair after watching tutorials online.
Rachel spent those months sharing memories and stories about Grace’s early life.
She died peacefully one morning in May with Daniel and Grace beside her.
Two weeks later, the adoption was finalized.
Grace Carter officially became Grace Brooks.
Five years later, Daniel stood in the audience at Grace’s school winter concert, watching her sing with her classmates.
Afterward, as they walked home through the cold evening, Grace slipped her hand into his.
“Dad,” she said.
