I retied the ribbon carefully and drove to their house.

Sarah answered the door with a smile that didn’t touch her eyes.

“What brings you here, Eleanor?” she asked coolly.

“Michael sent these for my birthday,” I said, offering the box. “They’re far too rich for me. I thought the kids would love them.”

For a brief second, something flickered across her face—uncertainty, maybe suspicion—but it vanished. She accepted the box.

She didn’t invite me in.

She never did anymore.

I went home with a familiar ache—but also peace. I’d done something kind.

Part 2: The Silence After

At exactly 7:00 a.m. the next morning, my phone rang.

It was Michael.

“How were the chocolates?” he asked.

The question felt… wrong.

“Oh, sweetheart,” I said lightly. “I gave them to Sarah and the kids. Noah adores chocolate.”

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Then he screamed.

“WHAT DID YOU DO?”

His voice cracked—not with anger, but panic.

“Did you eat any?” he shouted. “Did the kids eat them yet? Answer me!”

“No—I just dropped them off.”

“You never think!” he roared. “Why do you always have to give things away?”

Then the line went dead.

Two hours later, Sarah called—hysterical.
