1. They Make the Towel Dry You Faster
Those lines are usually created with a dobby weave or terry bar design that does two genius things:
- Increases surface area → more fluffy terry loops touch your skin at once.
- Creates tiny air channels → water wicks away from your body quicker and the towel itself dries faster on the rack (less mildew smell).
Cheap towels are just terry all over. Good towels use these stripes to supercharge absorbency exactly where you need it.
2. They Stop the Towel From Falling Apart
The ends of towels get the most abuse: tugging off racks, snagging in washing machines, kids yanking them. That’s why most towels have dense, tightly woven dobby borders at top and bottom.
Think of them as built-in reinforcement bars:
- Prevent fraying and unraveling
- Keep edges straight instead of curling
- Hold the towel’s shape wash after wash
Without those borders, the terry loops would pull out and the towel would look ragged in a few months.
