"You can help her. Who said you can't?" I replied, my patience wearing thin. "I'm not telling you to abandon her. Just find her another jobsomewhere else, but not in your company."
"Okay, I'll find a suitable position for her," he promised, but there was a clear avoidance in his tone as though he were sidestepping the urgency of my request.
"She leaves tomorrow," I insisted, my unease growing once more. However, no matter how much I pressed, Caleb continued to dodge, trying to push off the matter until later.
When his cell phone rang unexpectedly, Caleb pulled it out and glanced at the screen, the contact name flashing. It was from Miss Myers. I watched as a wave of uneasiness swept across his face, deepening with every second.
"Caleb, I had a car accident and I'm at the hospital right now..." Scarlett's soft, trembling voice drifted through the phone. She had not even finished her sentence, but before she could, Caleb was already on his feet, rushing toward the door.
I could still hear his frantic voice as he hurried out: "How did this happen? Are you hurt? Is it serious? Which hospital? I'll be there right away!"
