Although medical treatment is essential, diet also plays a key role in the management of hypothyroidism. Some foods can interfere with thyroid function or medication absorption, so it’s critical to know what to avoid and what to include in your diet. Always consult with a trusted doctor!

9 Foods to Avoid if You Have Hypothyroidism

1. Soy and derivatives

Soy contains compounds called isoflavones that can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones. They can also make it harder to absorb levothyroxine (a common medication to treat hypothyroidism). Avoid tofu, soy milk, textured protein, and other by-products.

2. Raw kale, broccoli, and cauliflower

These cruciferous vegetables contain goitrogens, substances that interfere with iodine uptake by the thyroid. Cooking them significantly reduces this effect, but if consumed raw in large quantities they can be problematic.

3. Gluten
Gluten can cause inflammation in people with celiac sensitivity or disease, a condition that is most often associated in those with autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. Considering a gluten-free diet may improve symptoms.
